The party brands were in full display during the 43-day government shutdown.  The dispute was over spending, naturally, and the Democrats wanted to keep doing it.

Note that the subsidies were intended to get us through the pandemic, and were always expected to expire.  But in a bait-and-switch, the Democrats insisted on extending them or making them permanent.   The cost of doing that, over ten years is estimated at $383 billion, and we all know how estimates work out.

Besides that, the continued infusion of taxpayer money into the insurance industry is a guarantee that costs will continue to go up.

The Republicans simply understood that we ought to be cutting expenses and not piling them on.  With less government money, the cost of healthcare will be forced downward.

Extending the subsidies would have been a major victory for the insurance industry.

One can only imagine the lobbying that’s been going on, and how much money the insurance lobby might have spent to buy a few votes.  It was close, but the calmer heads prevailed.  Now, think about this:  In my personal situation, I have my insurance set except for Part D, which is the pharmaceuticals.  For 2025, I paid $537.60 for my plan, and I didn’t use any prescriptions.    Whatever the reason for that, my $537.60 was pure profit for Aetna. (I eat a lot of broccoli and raw microwaved spinach.)

For 2026, if I stay with that plan, the cost will double, and at this point I still have no prescriptions to pay for.  That means Aetna would clear more than $1,000 in pure profit from me.  And I can’t simply refuse to buy a prescription plan because I would be charged an extra 10 percent for life if I ever tried to buy a plan at some future time.

Other people, especially young adults who are generally healthy, may have seen a similar effect.  They may have used way less of the insurance coverage than they paid for, again enriching the insurance companies.  That’s what the Obamacare mandates were supposed to do – bring healthy people in to pay for the less healthy, usually older folks.

Note that the insurance companies have the money to hire celebrity spokesmen like Coach Nick Saban, and to animate geckos, ducks, pigs, emus, and such to create elaborately produced TV commercials.  Insurance is a boring product, and they do this to make it interesting and to stand out.  It works, apparently.

Then, there’s the fact that Democrats are always ready to tax and spend.

It’s their brand.  It’s what they do.  Their main existential crisis is Climate Change, which is essentially a license to tax, spend, and redistribute money.  Climate Change has always been the best permanent reason to spend copious amounts of money for virtually no ROI, and the COVID-19 pandemic was the temporary excuse.

The Republicans’ favorite existential crisis is the $38,000,000,000,000 National Debt, which provides no opportunities for spending more; it calls for spending less, which is not how you get reelected.  And it’s not as much fun as handing free stuff out like Zohran Mamdani wants to do.

Yep, the Obamacare mess is a form of socialism.  It was named officially the “Affordable Care Act.”  Laugh out loud all you want.  Democrats love names like that.  Another unintentionally hilarious name for a bill is the “Inflation Reduction Act.”  Perhaps the Democrats think you won’t notice how that turned out.

The mess we’re in with high consumer prices is because of Biden-era spending.

When government uses a crisis – such as the pandemic – to flood billions or trillions into the economy as stimulus, all that money devalues the dollars in your bank account.  So, prices go up across the board and they rarely go down.  Consumer have to wait years for salaries to catch up, and Congress keep spending in the meantime.

Let’s turn to Google AI for a quick list of what Congress spent during the four years that Joe Biden and his autopen were in power.

• American Rescue Plan Act of 2021: This was a $1.9 trillion economic stimulus package designed to provide broad relief from the COVID-19 pandemic. Its provisions included $1,400 stimulus checks for individuals, an expansion of unemployment benefits, an expanded child tax credit, assistance for renters and homeowners, and funding for vaccine distribution, schools, and state and local governments.
• Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act): Signed in November 2021, this legislation is a once-in-a-generation investment of more than $1 trillion into the nation’s “hard” infrastructure, with approximately $550 billion in new federal investments. Key areas of spending include roads and bridges, public transit and rail, airports and ports, the electric grid, and clean drinking water and high-speed internet infrastructure.
• CHIPS and Science Act of 2022: Signed in August 2022, this act is valued at roughly $280 billion to strengthen American manufacturing and technology capabilities. It includes over $50 billion in grants and tax credits to incentivize domestic semiconductor (computer chip) manufacturing, as well as funding for scientific research and workforce development.
• Inflation Reduction Act of 2022: Passed using the reconciliation process, this legislation represents the largest-ever investment in clean energy and climate action. It directs hundreds of billions toward climate and energy programs through tax credits and incentives, extends Affordable Care Act subsidies, and allows Medicare to negotiate some prescription drug prices. It also aims to reduce the deficit through a 15% corporate minimum tax and enhanced IRS enforcement.

All this spending was just fine for somebody, but as a whole, it gave us Bidenflation.  We’re still in it.  Consider this:  In Trump’s first term, we had virtually no inflation.  In Biden’s term, we had massive inflation.  In Trump’s second term, we have some inflation but not as much as Biden had.

How do we get back to virtually no inflation?

Republicans have to stop the Democrats from spending.  They will not stop on their own.  Lots of Republicans bloviate about the National Debt, but you almost never hear a Democrat mention it.  They seem to think it’s not a problem.  In New York, we’re about to see that point-of-view be put to a massive test.  In reality, free stuff really costs a lot, and with no profit motive, it usually is not of high quality.  That’s called socialism.

The Democrats, though, are good at using emotion rather than facts.  Their argument on extending the Obamacare subsidies or making them permanent was that people are going to be priced out of health insurance.  They’re right about that, and the argument may resonate.  But Obamacare, which was supposed to make health insurance affordable, did quite the opposite.

If the Democrats had won the shutdown battle and extended the subsidies, healthcare costs and insurance for it would have shot up again.  Just like tuition when the government took over student loans.  More government infusion of money, and you’ll get higher prices.  It never fails.

But that’s a rational, fact-based argument, and the Democrats will usually stick with emotion, and blame people who are successful.  Republicans ought to come up with a plan for healthcare that involves far less government.  That’s a tall order, and it will take both parties to actually accomplish anything.  That’s why we probably never will.

Who did I think was the most consequential president of my lifetime?  Without hesitation, I answered:  Lyndon Johnson.  In fact, Johnson’s War on Poverty, Great Society, and immigration policies have echoed through the years, and not a good way.

On the other hand, what President Trump is doing with Elon Musk and DOGE could save America in the long run.

For generations, Congress has spent money we don’t have. 

The National Debt is now more than $36 trillion.  That’s unsustainable.

The odd thing is how Democrats focus on climate change, which is naturally occurring, and have no problem with spending the country into oblivion.  Trump is stepping on the brakes, and that may be his legacy.

If you think DOGE isn’t consequential, take a look at the headlines.

These stories are all from an aggregation website on the date of this writing, February 15, 2025.  These are the days’ top stories.  They’re all about Trump, and Musk, and DOGE and how the two sides are squaring off:

You don’t even need to read these stories to get the gist.  Donald Trump, with Musk’s help and the backing of most congressional Republicans are trying to stop the fiscal bleeding.  Note that the GOP House is set to go after judges that are blocking the agenda.  But on the other side, spend-crazed Democrats seem unwilling to cut back by a thin dime.  They’ve lined up a federal judge to stop any layoffs at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau – an agency that we didn’t have just a few years ago.  And maybe it does good work, but we have no money to fund it.

This seemingly is the hill that Democrats have chosen to die on.

It’s a fact that the Democrat Party is flailing in the wilderness.  But why pick this issue to fight Trump?  They might have better luck opposing him on immigration or the War in Ukraine.  But to go after him for trying to get the nation’s fiscal house in order is insane.  Democrats are insane.

To the Democrats, climate change is the world’s big existential threat.  They’ve been harping on that for decades, but summer is still hot and winter is still cold, and Florida has not fallen into the sea.  The most salient result of the climate change movement is how it transformed Al Gore into a multi-millionaire.  Not much that the Left has predicted on climate change has actually come true.

Now, take a look at irrational government spending. 

The COVID Pandemic gave them the perfect excuse to spend spend spend.  And Biden did.  The spending started with Trump as “stimulus,” but then the voters tossed him out, thinking that Biden would be a great unifier and would be essentially harmless.  That turned out not to be true.  From the American Rescue Act to the Inflation Reduction Act, to whatever Biden was able to get from his Build Back Better plan, he rejected any notion that spending copious amounts of money might have negative consequences.

And now, look at the price of eggs.  Look at the price of everything.  Nothing’s affordable.  Eating out is becoming a luxury.  Groceries, gasoline, and especially buying a house are all out of sight.  Biden’s massive spending is laden with fraud and waste, and that includes his open borders policy that has caused so much misery, death, and expense.  Trump hired Tom Homan to put an end to that.  New York will no longer be putting up illegal aliens in luxury hotels while Americans can’t afford to eat breakfast.

Waste.  Fraud.  Earmarks.  It has to stop.

Republicans love earmarks.  We write in this space about Central Texas Congressman John Carter who loves to bring home the bacon to the tune of millions of dollars, and then brags about it in a taxpayer-funded newsletter mailed with franking privileges.  Carter’s type must go.

But Democrats!  That’s another whole thing.  They want bigger, ever-expanding government.  Blank checks to Ukraine.  More climate change abatement to virtue signal, even if it makes no difference at all.  Meanwhile, our interest payment on $36,000,000,000,000 of debt is more than we spend on the military.  That’s money we get no ROI for.

Congress and past presidents have gotten the United States into a mess.  The clean-up has started.

If Trump succeeds, it will be beyond consequential.  It could save the country and the world.  Earth does not need a debt-ridden America.  But Trump will have to dig deeper.  While Elon Musk is auditing agencies and rooting out fraud, abuse, and entrenched bureaucrats, someone will have to take a look at Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and other entitlements.  That’s where the biggest spending is, and it’s where the biggest part of the National Debt lies.

Trump knows that.  He will have to find ways to administer those programs without bankrupting the country.  And he might.  A leaner, more efficient U.S. government is vital to the survival of our Great Experiment in self-government.  If we get there, we will have to accomplish it without the help of Democrats.

Ask yourself this.  Let’s say Democrats succeeded in accomplishing their number one goal of stopping climate change.  At that point, many trillions upon trillions of dollars would be spent and redistributed to developing nations.  Winter would still be cold and summer would still be hot.  Your house payment would still be high and a dollar bill would be worth less and less.

If Trump succeeds, and this will take more than one administration so be careful who you vote for in four years, America will be able to pay its bills and maybe even pay down the National Debt.  That would free up billions of dollars to go toward something other than interest.  Inflation would dwindle to what it was before Biden.  Your dollars would retain their value more than they are now.  Your kids might be able to buy a house and move out of yours.

The bottom line is this. 

If the Democrats get what they want to fix the climate, it will not make anything better.  The cost will make it worse.  If Trump and Musk and efforts to get the country in a good place financially succeed – even partially – inflation abates, costs go down, gasoline and eggs will become more affordable, and the American Dream of owning your own house will once again be a reality.

And Donald Trump will supplant Lyndon Baines Johnson as the most consequential president of your lifetime.

Democrats are odd people.

Nancy Pelosi just told us that Joe Biden is one of the greatest presidents ever; so great that his likeness ought to be added to Mount Rushmore.  Also, Nancy Pelosi was perhaps the driving force behind kicking Joe Biden off the ticket.

A few weeks ago, Kamala Harris, the queen of word salads, was considered a major drag on the ticket.  Now Democrats gush over her uncanny ability to campaign.

Democrats attack Donald Trump for spreading nasty rumors about Democrats, but Kamala’s running mate, Tim Walz, delights in spreading a nasty and untrue rumor about JD Vance.

I can’t discern any logic to Democrats at all – not in the way they vote nor in the way they govern.

Sorry, liberals.  Conservatives make far more sense.

Yes, I am fully aware the Democrats are clamoring for a woman president at the same time a left-wing Supreme Court justice, a woman, can’t define what a woman is.  This is part of today’s nonsensical contagion about changing one’s sex, which isn’t possible even though Democrats contend that it is.

What’s even more illogical is they demand we-of-sound-mind pretend along with them.  We refuse – because it’s not logical.

Joe Biden is a case study in illogic.

Biden bungled the Afghanistan Withdrawal badly.  I believe it goes down in history as the worst foreign policy debacle in modern history.  And yet, Joe Biden called it “an extraordinary success.”

Robert Gates once said that Biden has been on the wrong side of every foreign policy decision.  Biden has served almost a full term as president and that losing streak is still intact.

On Israel, Biden pledges this important ally America’s full support, but then tells them how to run a war, and withholds some offensive weapons that Israel needs.  Illogically, he works for a cease-fire, which would be a major break for Hamas, the terrorist organization that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is trying to destroy.

If Iran’s major proxies – Hamas and Hezbollah – could be wiped out in this war, there might be peace.  Biden doesn’t want that.  Totally illogical.

The idea of a “two-state solution” for Israel and “Palestine” is outrageously illogical. 

One side would agree with it, but the other side wants to exterminate the Israeli people.  That’s what they mean when say “From the River to the Sea.”  Illogically, Democrats support this insane idea.

Biden is clueless and illogical with regard to the economy.  The “Inflation Reduction Act” that is often listed as one of Biden major accomplishments cost $891 billion.  But massive government spending is what causes inflation.  I’m telling you – Democrats are illogical and just plain weird.

Chuck Schumer hasn’t a logical bone in his body.

In 2008, the Democratic Senate Leader was responsible for the second-largest bank failure in American history.  CNBC carried the story:

He doesn’t stop bank runs; he starts them. Or, at least, has started one. The collapse of Indymac bank, the second largest bank failure in American history, began with a letter from the office of Senator Charles Schumer on June 27. He questioned the viability of the bank. When a senior senator who is in a number of influential posts regarding oversight of bank regulators directly attacks the confidence of a depository institution, it matters. Not surprisingly, the director of the Office of Thrift Supervision concluded that the collapse of the bank immediately following the Senator’s comments was not a coincidence. Director Reich concluded that Senator Schumer had ‘given the bank a heart attack’.

Did you get that?  Schumer did nothing to stop a bank run.  Instead, he started one.  Chuck Schumer literally gave the bank a heart attack.  But Schumer’s resume as an illogical nutcase would get worse.  He famously stood on the steps of the Supreme Court and threatened two justices – Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch.  Schumer denied that his statement constituted a threat, but here’s what he said:

I want to tell you Gorsuch, I want to tell you Kavanaugh, you have released the whirlwind and you will pay the price. You won’t know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.

I’m logical.  I know what a threat sounds like – and what Schumer said fills the bill.

Of course, a demented nutcase took Schumer’s advice and tried to kill Justice Kavanaugh.  Had I been the U.S. Attorney General at the time, I would have indicted Schumer for suborning assassination.  He can be illogical all he wants, but he almost got a High Court justice murdered.  Schumer is a menace to the country and has no business serving.

Kamala Harris illogical, but she has an excuse.

Harris isn’t bright.  We can give her a slight break for that because she never really knows what she’s for or against, and if she did, she couldn’t iterate it without a teleprompter.

Harris’ inability to speak in complete sentences is legendary.  Less known is her propensity to speak at a third-grade level, explaining such things as Ukraine being a smaller country next to Russia which is a bigger country and why she loves yellow school buses.

On serious topics, she is just lost.  She reverts to a couple of key words that seem to stick in her mind and we get the repetitive words salads that she is known for.  She has no logic, but also no core values outside of climate change and “women’s reproductive rights.”  She can define a woman when convenient.

The Biden Border Crisis is a serious topic.  I suspect it was a get-even appointment when Biden named her a “Border Czar,” but she didn’t want to do it.  It was a hard job, about which, she had no interest.  There was no way it would further her career.  She ignored it, and Biden seemed to think she did a fine job.

Democrats are odd people, as I say.  Weird.

The Democratic party, as a whole, is odd and illogical.

It is the Party of Death.  Not for serial killers, mind you, but for innocent babies in the womb.  This position alone keeps me and millions like me from ever considering a Democrat when I vote.  My parents were poor, but they wanted me.  What a gift from God that my parents wanted me and let me live and nurtured me.  What an illogical mess the Democrats have made of the basic issue of life.  They are shameful.

The LGBTQIA+ nonsense has reached a fever pitch. 

Biologically, the whole concept is illogical.  Science tells us that there are males and females.  Nature tells us that.  The Bible tells us that.  It’s obvious that it’s true.  Men and women are wired to be attracted to each other.  It’s how the species survives.  It’s so basic that it seems silly to argue.

The current transgender movement is LGBT to the extreme.  But illogically, Democrats believe you can cut up a man and invert certain parts of him and he becomes her.   They call it by the nice-sounding name of “gender affirming care.” As I wrote in my novelty song, “Men in Bra’s”:

When I was in school and we learned about sex
It was all binary and it wasn’t complex.
With an innie you’re a girl, with an outie you’re a boy.
But a nip and a tuck and now Rhonda’s Roy.

The song is meant to be funny.  But when parents start using puberty blockers and surgical mutilation on young children, the laughing stops.  This is illogical.  Insane.  And Democrats support it.  And they support the pronoun insanity.  Note to Democrats:  They/them pronouns make you sound silly and unserious.  Get it off your websites because they brand you as an illogical leftist.  But at least it’s an easy way to know they/their politics and avoid that company or that school.

Democrats are the Party of the Squad – the group of House members who seem to hate America.  They are also the party of the pro-Hamas, pro-Palestinian protesters who roil college campuses and demand that America support “Palestine,” run by a terrorist proxy of Iran — instead of Israel, which is the only country in the Middle East that is similar to the United States.  Illogical and weird.

Democrats are economic illiterates. 

Massive government spending is the cause of inflation and higher consumer costs, and yet they believe the out-of-control spending can be offset by more spending.  This is beyond illogical; this is insane.  But Democrats believe it.  You almost never hear a Democrat express concern about our $35,000,000,000,000 national debt.

Where do we stop?

Democrats preach freedom, but want to force you to drive electric cars which are impractical in many ways.  They are all indoctrinated into the cult of Climate Change and use it as an excuse to redistribute wealth.  They want to provide permanent housing for the homeless, but rarely ever look for ways to get the homeless off of drugs and alcohol and into being productive members of society.

Democrats believe the best qualifications for public office are to be female, homosexual and a person of color.   Kamala Harris checked two important boxes for identity politics and got the nomination without ever getting a single vote from the electorate.  Oh, but the Democrats are going to save Democracy.

And yet, young people and celebrities like Charlamagne Tha God are flocking to Kamala because she’s a female and a person of color.  There is no end to their lunacy.

Life?  No, they don’t support that for babies in the womb.

Liberty?  No.  You must have only approved kitchen appliances.

Pursuit of happiness?  Liberals are most miserable people on the planet.

He’s a walking contradiction, partly truth and partly fiction.

I think that’s a perfect description of Democrats.  They want stuff to be true, but when it isn’t, they just go on believing it.

In the seventies, the Left was frantic about human activity triggering an ice age. Time Magazine was concerned with excessive snow. Al Gore gave us just ten years because of warming. That was in 2006. Yet climate change drives left-wing politics to this day.

Larry Elder and John Stossel expose left-wing so-called “science” for what it is.

What it is, is a way for government to grow, and for income redistribution to be accomplished using “science” as a way to get it done.

Domestically, the Left enjoys taking money from groups they don’t like (the wealthiest 1 percent, conservatives, people who vote Republican) and moving that money to people they believe will vote for Democrats for life.

The most recent example of that is President Biden’s insane Student Loan Forgiveness debacle. The administration struggles to explain who will pay for that, but it’s the American taxpayer – pure and simple.   Biden hopes that those who get the benefit will always vote Democrat and he may turn out to be right.

Climate change, on the other hand, is the reason for redistributing money to the Left’s preferred groups.

Look at what California is trying to do.

If the Golden State succeeds in forcing electric cars to the market over internal combustion engines, who benefits? Elon Musk for one, but essentially this will pump government money into alternative energy.

Electric cars may be the wave of the future (or they may not, as they have a lot of inherent problems) but if so, then the free market should decide and not the left-wing ideologues of California.

Meanwhile the Democrats, on a party-line basis, passed the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, which is really the Green new Deal.

As soon as it passed, the Left began promoting it as a climate change bill.

Here’s a news flash: if the bill performs to the very top of expectations, it will have zero effect on the climate in the Unites States and zero affect around the world.

But it will provide money to left-wing causes and it pleases the nutcase left-wing base.

While Elder quotes, Stossel exposes the vapid stupidity of left-wing “science.”

The Associated Press and CNN, not actually news organizations, would never report this. Stossel writes about the “ridiculous papers” hoaxes that fool “experts” (his quotations marks) in scholarly journals from time to time.

Comedians and other pranksters write the stupidest “scientific” articles they can imagine and submit them for publication. You’d be surprised at how many learned journals will publish such fake articles as “Embracing Fatness as Self-Care in the Era of Trump.” Yes, that actually happened.

The article was accepted by Massey University’s “Fat Studies” conference. Sea Matheson wrote it, but “she” is actually comedian Steven Crowder.   The Left is so easy, especially if there’s en element that would denigrate Donald Trump.

So now we’re about to spend almost a trillion dollars to try to cool the planet by a small fraction of one degree.

Whatever climate change abatement comes from the “Inflation reduction Act,” it will have no effect whatsoever on the climate. Logic says that, but real science says it too. But the Left is happy, and you can now start to pay the bill and get ready for your next income tax audit.

There is some good news in all this. You won’t have to worry about it much longer. Here’s the final quote from Mr. Elder’s column:

“The world is going to end in 12 years if we don’t address climate change.”

So we have until 2031 to save the planet. More likely, we’ll have many more years to pay for saving the planet while it continues on as it will for the next few billion years.
