President Obama says mistakes were made – but he didn’t make them.

Obama laid the blame squarely in two places. First, he told Steve Kroft that U.S. intelligence agencies failed to recognize that the Iraqis were not ready to defend their own country – and put too much trust in the Iraqi military. In case you didn’t quite get that, the President named Director of National Intelligence James Clapper as the fall guy. Obama also said the degeneration of Iraq into a premier staging ground for terrorists also is not his fault. For that, he blamed former Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. Obama stressed that when “we” left, we had left them with a democracy that was intact and a military that was well equipped. Well, yes, President George W. Bush did do that – and as Obama says, the opportunity was squandered. But by whom? Obama says it’s not his fault.
