If a member of Congress is to save the United States from President Barack Obama, it will have to be a Democrat. Obama has taken the United States off the world stage – and the world, as former Secretary of Sate Madeleine Albright put it – is in a mess. He has taken control of the nation’s healthcare system – and it, too, is a mess. He has no plan to stem the flow of illegals now flooding our southern border – and shows no desire to control the border even if he could. donkey

And yet, his one big success – using wedge issues against his political enemies – has left the Republican Party divided and weak. The GOP’s leadership seems more concerned with attacking conservatives within its own party than with dealing with Obama’s policies.

During this presidency, the country has seen a stimulus bill that benefitted unions and other political cronies; a failed renewable energy policy that also benefitted cronies; ineptness with regard to the Benghazi attack and a subsequent cover-up; the use of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to single out conservative groups for harassment; and now the scandal regarding long wait-times for veterans’ care.

President Obama has not seemed concerned about these things. Coldly, he goes to the golf course or is seen on TV shooting pool and eating burgers – or worse, he spends valuable time at endless fundraisers in an attempt to keep Democrats in office. Mr. Obama seems pleased with the way the country is headed and indifferent about the rest of the world.

House Speaker John Boehner has found one issue that he intends to challenge the President on – Mr. Obama’s “pen and phone.” Obama uses executive orders to get around Congress – brags about it incessantly – and when that doesn’t work, he uses government agencies like the EPA to make the rules that he wants implemented. Speaker Boehner is proceeding with a lawsuit charging that Obama’s unilateral changes to the Affordable Care Act are an unconstitutional power grab.

The lawsuit has merit, but it is a weak and time-consuming response to Obama’s in-your-face misuse of presidential power. Even if the suit is successful, Obama will likely be out of office by then. Boehner has taken impeachment – the constitutional remedy – off the table.

As unlikely as it seems, our country needs a prominent Democrat to step forward and call out Obama.

You’ll recall that, during Watergate, it was a Republican, the late Howard Baker, who famously asked, “What did the President know and when did he know it?” Watergate seems almost quaint compared to Obama’s crimes against the Constitution – but in the
70’s, the Big Three networks carried the hearings live and America was enthralled. But Watergate was nothing but a small-time burglary that, had Richard Nixon not been paranoid, might have been nothing but a snippet somewhere in Section B.

Obama has done far worse. But Obama is no Richard Nixon. He has instilled fear into the hearts of Republicans. If they impeach him, he gets a new wedge issue — the current one is immigration – and crams it down their throats. The Republicans that would take on Obama – Sen. Ted Cruz and others like him – are scorned within their own party and by the media.

So it will have to be a Democrat – someone like former Senator Joe Lieberman. But in a party dominated by Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, Dick Durbin and others on the far Left, we’re hard-pressed to think of one possible Democrat that might step up and call out his own President. Meanwhile, Obama golfs, raises funds, and destroys.
