LESTER IN WILLIAMS OUT

In February 2015, NBC TV suspends Brian Williams, NBC Nightly News host, for 6 months without pay because of inaccurate statements about his coverage of events in the field. The former NBC TV anchor who is an MSNBC anchor from 1996 to 2004, now takes a lesser role on MSNBC as anchor of breaking news & special reports in August 2015. On Thursday, ‎June 18, 2015 Andrew Lack, NBC News and MSNBC Chairman, reveals that Lester Holt is the new anchor of NBC Nightly News.

WEIGHING TV NEWS ANCHORS In his expose book, Weighing Anchors, longtime network news writer Mervin Block muses: Evening news stars often fail us. Can you spot their mistakes? Instead of writing about network TV anchors’ delivery, wardrobe or favorite desserts, he points out distortions, deceptions, discrepancies and abuses of broadcast writing style. Block shows how newscasters: fudge facts, hammer home hype, label stories exclusive that aren’t, present old news as breaking news and exaggerate medical news.

DALE PARSONS [ex WNBC-660/WLTW FM/WGH-720/WTAR-850/WLTY FM] (Hana, Maui, HI) Subject: First Convention on Radio. Aloha Jim, While it is true the first radio broadcast from a presidential convention took place from the Republican convention in Cleveland on June 10, 1924, the NBC Radio network did not come into existence until November 15, 1926. NBC’s roots, however, were in that convention broadcast in 1924. AT&T’s WEAF and RCA’s WJZ, both in New York, headed up respective wired networks of about 25 stations total that broadcast the event. WEAF would later be the owned and operated flagship station of RCA’s NBC Red Network and WJZ would become the owned and operated flagship of RCA’s NBC Blue Network. Today, WJZ is known as WABC and WEAF is known as WFAN. — Dale Parsons

JAY WALKER [KJKK FM 100.3/KTSA-550 KTFM FM/Jay Walker Prod] (Dallas/McKinney, TX) Subject: On the weather and IPAWS/EAS. Hi Jim With all the weather we’ve had recently in North Texas this spring I’ve noticed something a bit disquieting. Seems the majority of stations have IPAWS/EAS units set to forward all watches and warnings for fear of getting a NOV. Many NOAA watches and warnings are simply repeats, in some cases many counties away. The problem with all this alert activity, people will get to the point of complacency since stations have cried “Wolf” one too many times. We didn’t have that problem back in the days of manned operation, an individual on duty would air watches and warnings at their discretion rather than the current “Blanket” approach happening today. Seems any station worthy of a license could have at least ONE TRAINED PERSON in the building 24/7, especially multi-station clusters to make a simple judgment call. You and Suzie stay safe and dry!!! BILL CHERRY [Realtor – in late 1950s Music ’til Dawn host on WWL-870] (Dallas, TX) Subject: JIM ROSE REMEMBERS RADIO June 12, 2015 [Friday] Issue #1415. Hi Jim. I like Mr. Sundeen’s observation. Bill Cherry

Record-Album-300x245TRIVIA ANSWER: On June 18, 1948 in New York City, Columbia Records publicly unveils its new long-playing vinyl phonograph record that spins around at 33 1/3-RPM (revolutions per minute). This is a far cry from the standard 78-RPM records made of a brittle shellac resin material. Unlike 78-RPM discs, which contain only two to three minutes of music on each side, the Long Playing LP records hold up to a full 23 minutes per side.

DUKE GILLELAND [Bob Wills] (Belton, TX) We left Houston in 1970 and KILT (610) was R & R as was KNUZ (1230). Country & Western side was KENR (1070) & the mighty KIKK (FM)! Oh but for the memories of our youth! Duke
