JACK PARNELL [former Program Director WHBQ-560] (Memphis, TN) Subject: Tom Bonner. Jim: Did you ever know or know of Tom Bonner, who once managed KARK TV in Little Rock? He’s another I’ve been wondering about…I think he may have retired by now, but really just wanna send him a “hello, howyabeen” email. He and I worked together for a few months at WHBQ Radio in 1958. JAY WALKER [CBS Radio Dallas/KJKK FM/Infinity KTSA-550/KTFM FM/Jay Walker Prod] (Dallas-McKinney, TX) It’s been hotter than blazes on this little patch of paradise, the “dog days” are officially here in the Red River Valley. So you and Suzie stay cool. Put your feet up, pour yourself a tall cold glass of sweet tea and some nice cold water for Suzie. By the way my old dog Charlie just loves ice cubes. He thinks it’s doggy ice cream. Jay Walker

[Gentleman] JIM CARTER [KCBQ/KNUS/WFAA/KONO/KLIF/KXOL] (San Antonio, TX) Subject: this ‘n that… Howdy again Jim: I don’t know how you got the notion but I never worked at KBUC. Also, when I was at KSLR it was 96.1 on the dial. Yes I received the Texas boot for playing Freddie’s Dead…should’ve gotten the big boot for having fun with June 19th…but fortunately Jack Roth had a relatively good sense of humor believe it or not…I’m living proof of that! Lol… Gentleman Jim Carter/San Antonio, TX.

CHARLES GEORGE [KC5RAI – ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: KTVT Channel 11. I noticed what use to have signs for KTVT at Central Expressway and Walnut Hill here in Dallas is boarded up. I was wondering was it actual studios are just office space used there? I have yet to subscribe to Cable or Satellite. I find radio is more interesting and playing my various instruments. I have enjoyed hearing The Jonathan Fisher Trio on Sunday Evenings at The Balcony Club in Dallas. He is amazing, I watched as well as listened he hardly ever removes his hand or looks at the instrument while playing. He does what I know most players are told is correct for playing. But I know many give excuses for not doing so… and that includes me. But then I am an amateur musician.

TRIVIA ANSWER: In March, 1922, the new Federal Radio Commission assigns call letters WLW on 710 kc in Cincinnati, OH as the 65th licensed radio station to go on the air. On June 1, 1927: WLW moves to 700 kc from the eighth floor of the Crosley Building at 1329 Arlington. On April 17, 1934, the FCC grants Crosley Broadcasting’s WLW-700 authority to use 500 kW. In May 1934, WLW-700’s sheer power which bills itself as The Nation’s Station booms out night broadcasts from Texas to Connecticut with a mammoth 500,000 watts. This is ten times the clear-channel 50,000 watt standard. March 1, 1939 is the end of The Nation’s Station when the world’s first station to operate with 500,000 watts of power WLW-700 returns to 50 kW.
