Issue #1446
by Jim Rose

For what seems like forever, a familiar voice on Fayetteville, NC radio airwaves, calls it quits after 52 years. In September 1963, after he discharges from the Army at Fort Bragg, Jeff Thompson begins his radio career. Thompson boasts that he decides to stay in Fayetteville: I married a local girl and raised three children. In 1976, Jeff is a regular on Fayetteville’s Morning News. While on WIDU-1600, Jeff Thompson retires from radio on October 31, 2015.

JACK PARNELL [former Program Director WHBQ-560] (Memphis, TN) Yeah, I guess you’re right, Jim. Many of my past radio friends have also passed. Being a member of the Tennessee Radio Hall of Fame, I get info fairly often that many of those around the state are no longer with us. One who I’ve told you about as being the first person ever to play Carl Perkins’ “Blue Suede Shoes”, Bill Haney, died about 8 years ago…I had known him since I was about 12 years old, he married one of mine and Shirley’s (my wife) high school classmates. I’ve tried to get him inducted into the TRHoF, posthumously, but it hasn’t happened yet. JP

JAY WALKER [CBS Radio Dallas/KJKK FM/Infinity KTSA-550/KTFM FM/Jay Walker Prod/40 Plus Years In Radio] (Dallas/McKinney, TX) Subject: Former KTVT. Morning Jim Charles George mentioned the old KTVT DFW studios on Central Expressway the other day. They’ve moved down the street to the “CBS Tower” at 75 and Fitzhugh where I worked with the radio cluster, KRLD, KRLD-FM, KLUV, KVIL, KMVK, and KJKK. CBS pretty well took over that property hence the official name “CBS Tower”. The primary studio facilities for KTVT and KTXA are located on Bridge Street off I-30, east of downtown Fort Worth. You and Suzie enjoy the cooler temps, soon enough we’ll be complaining about the winter HAHA Jay Walker

CLAUDE HALL [Former Billboard magazine Vox Jox columnist] (Las Vegas, NV) Subject: Vox Jox. Just a reminder that you can now read my commentary each Monday at www.voxjox.org/. I’ve teamed up with Rollye James Cornell and we’re both writing the column these days. Old memories as well as new ideas and ideals have a home here. For example, did you know that there was a secret apartment in the Billboard office at 146th West Street in New York City? This week, some members of the Association hangout at the Billboard rooftop garden! To subscribe: voxjox-subscribe@voxjox.org See you there! Claude Hall

TRIVIA ANSWER: On March 2, 1922, WNBC-660 signs on for the first time as WEAF owned by AT&T Western Electric.

Video: D-Day on WEAF.

It is the first radio station in New York City. The call letters are believed to stand for Western Electric AT&T Fone or Water, Earth, Air and Fire. However, records suggest that the call letters are assigned from an alphabetical sequence. The first assigned calls are WDAM. But, they quickly drop those call letters, which come from the same alphabetical sequence.

CC MCCARTNEY [Voice Imaging-ex KRBE FM, WKY] (Nashville, TN) Subject: Howdy! Thanks pal, same to the two of you. Great reading material, I really enjoy your work!

LEWIS CARROLL (January 27, 1832 – January 14, 1898) [Alice in Wonderland] Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end; then stop.
