The NFL saw its ratings in a slow decline last year – but bounced back with an exciting comeback win for the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl. This might be a good time for the League to concentrate on its product and deal with its declining audience.

Instead, it’s taken a cue from the National Basketball Association and the National Collegiate Athletic Association – and jumped into the fray over bathrooms.

I admit that this puzzles me. Why these sports leagues want to alienate half the nation is beyond me. For every fan that is worried sick about some poor transgendered man being forced to use the ladies room because “he’s” really a woman – there is at least one person who thinks the sports league should butt out.

The NFL is in the sports entertainment business. Why it thinks it should get into political diputes is a mystery.

The NFL is warning Texas.

The League has issued a statement in response to Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick who is pushing the Texas Bathroom Bill. The bill would force people to use the bathroom based on gender-at-birth. The NFL says it might not award any more Super Bowl games to Texas if it actually decides to codify gender as being what God made someone.

The NBA has already pulled events from North Carolina over the bathroom controversy. Amazing, huh? Just a few years ago, this seemed goofy.

Just a few years ago, men used the men’s room and women used the ladies’ room – and all seemed well. It seemed like a matter of basic biology and common sense.

But Obama became president and all hell broke loose as the President evolved over this issue. That’s the first thing that happened.

The second thing is that businesses and sports leagues decided that, after thousands of years of bathrooms being separated by birth gender, the commonsense normal no longer applies. Target stores opened up their bathrooms so that so-called transgenders could use the bathroom corresponding to whatever sex he/she identifies with.

Why Target or the NFL would want to jump into this mess is anybody’s guess – but there’s what I think.

The NFL and other businesses that are taking the left-wing approach to this issue have fall for Obama’s “right side of history” argument. They see a major societal trend and want to cash in by jumping on the bandwagon.

Unfortunately, for them, football is enjoyed by a lot of good old boys who drink beer and use the products advertised during the games. Most of those viewers are not left-wingers. A great deal of white-collar workers are not leftists either.

The NFL treads on dangerous ground.

Besides, Houston and Dallas are both top 5 media markets. Can they really threaten to pull out of two of America’s largest metro areas for future Super Bowls? Not only are Houston and Dallas highly populated, they both have modern, retractable-roofed stadia that are ideal for big games.

The NFL is risking a backlash from conservatives that form a big part of the League’s fan base.

There was a backlash when liberal quarterback Colin Kaepernick refused to stand for the National Anthem.

There may also be a backlash over three left-wing players who pulled out of a goodwill trip to Israel. Michael Bennett of the Seattle Seahawks says he won’t go because he is sympathetic to the Palestinians. Kenny Stills of the Miami Dolphins and Justin Forsett of the Denver Broncos also say they will pull out of this trip.

Never mind that Palestinian terrorists kill Israelis on a regular basis and that the Israelis have tried time and again to make peace by offering the Palestinian authorities 99 prevent of what they want – only to be rebuffed.

Liberals like these three players always seem to side with terrorists, while being highly critical of Israel – a county much like us. Where they get this crap is hard to tell – but some of it comes from Muhammad Ali – and some obviously comes from left-wing college professors that hate Israel.

And this is not even to mention player support in the NFL for the terrorist Black Lives Matter movement.

These issues combine to make the NLF look bad.

But the League also makes the League look bad. The players mentioned above have a right to believe what they want. The NFL will have to figure out how to contain the damage if conservatives decide to watch – say – Nascar instead of prof football. But the NFL does not have to make it worse. Entering the bathroom controversy makes it worse.
