In the Fabulous Fifties, our ideal wholesome couple is movie star Debbie Reynolds and new Coke Time singing sensation hubby Eddie Fisher. When Elizabeth Taylor steals America’s Sweetheart, Reynolds’ husband, Eddie Fisher, it sparks a major Hollywood scandal. We remember Debbie’s hit single Tammy plus one of her movies Singin’ in the Rain. Ironically, Debbie Reynolds passes away at the home of her son as they discuss funeral plans for daughter Carrie Fisher, who dies Tuesday.

On the day that Elvis Presley passes (August 16, 1977) I’m on my way to Houston, TX as a DJ on Country KIKK FM (95.7) which is #1. In 1993, when I’m a DJ on Country KILT FM, its owner Westinghouse buys rival, KIKK FM. At Noon November 4, 2002, KIKK FM flips to Smooth Jazz KHJZ FM. At 3:00 pm on March 13, 2008, KHJZ FM flips to Top 40/CHR KKHH FM. At 12:30 pm Friday, December 30, 2016 Top 40/CHR KKHH FM flips to AC 95.7 The Spot. Radio is like a Music Go Round.

WALTON & JOHNSON ON THE MOVE  walton-johnson

For 2017, two New Orleans, LA stations have morning show changes. iHeartMedia News-Talk WRNO FM (99.5) releases morning host ‘Gerry V’ Vaillancourt. His show also simulcasts on sister WJBO-1150 Baton Rouge. Entercom Classic Rock WKBU FM (Bayou 95.7) reveals that regionally syndicated Walton & Johnson informs WKBU FM they will not renew their contract. Rumors are Walton & Johnson will resurface on WRNO FM, where they previously anchor mornings from 1999-2004.

Chicago listeners love sports and Sports Talk on the radio but can the city withstand three Sports Talk radio stations? Already, The Score WSCR-670 and ESPN WMVP-1000 are ratings leaders in Men 25-54. A group of investors seek to launch a third All-Sports radio outlet in the Windy City in the first half of 2017. The station will be on a new AM frequency for the Chicago market located in the south suburbs, but will reach most of Chicago and the suburbs.

BUD BUSCHARDT [WFAA TV CH 8 Director, KVIL FM, WFAA-570, ABC sat radio DJ] (Dallas, TX) Jim, I did the first oldies show in DFW before Oldies Stations even existed. 57 Nostalgia Place aired on WFAA (AM) from 1973 until 1976 when 570 went from “Musicradio” to “Talk Radio”. There are clips and even complete shows on the internet. Check Google if you are curious. I was first to do “thematic” oldies shows…a stable for oldies DJ’s now. I show my college students clips from Art Vuolo’s “History of the American DJ”. (It is on YouTube). They cannot believe that radio was ever that much fun! Like you, I remember the good old days of radio and am sad they will never return. (Bring back analog, turntables, records, and carts!) Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Bud

ED MILLER [ex KPCN-730 OM/ND] (Austin, TX) Jim, Hard to imagine that all that at KPCN (730) took place half a century ago. It was, as you said, some of the most fun I ever had, and preceded some other really dreadful radio gigs that I, like you, worked in other cities after getting fired from better jobs. Don’t know how KKDA got a full-time license on 730. It was a Mexican Clear Channel that we were required to protect at night 50 years ago. Something must have changed during deregulation a few years back. I can only imagine what we could have done with a 24 hour operation that could have competed with first KBOX and then WBAP before they won the D/FW C&W sweepstakes with their full-time signals. Sorry we couldn’t get a KPCN reunion pulled together this year. I hope we can in ’17. Best regards, ~Ed

JOANIE GREEN [KPRC TV CH 2, KZEW FM, KFWD FM, KNOK FM, KAUM FM, KILT FM, KNUZ-1230, Metro Traffic, Houston Taping for the Blind] (Tulsa, OK) Hi Jim, I first started doing radio in 1969 at the campus radio stations at SMU & North Texas State (Now I think it’s University of North Texas). I taught myself the boards and got my feet wet. I worked for KZEW (and I’m on their poster. I’m the one who set all that up) and Jen now has my ZOO ring. Ira is so excited some are still around ~ I sent him a photo of her wearing it around Dallas (he’s still in Dallas). They tracked me down for the Zoo Reunion this year, but I didn’t make it to the event. Take care and talk with you soon. Joan

Sheb Wooley

Sheb Wooley

On December 29, 1945 Sheb Wooley records 4 songs for Bullet Records at WSM-650 Radio studios as the first commercial recordings made in Nashville, TN.

CHARLES GEORGE [KC5RAI – ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Merry Christmas! I hope you are enjoying the Holiday Season. I find I am listening less to the radio. But part of that is because the songs I like I already have in most cases. And those I don’t I can usually fake on my guitar by finding the words and chords using Google. I do not have Cable since my antenna from RCA is more than enough for me. Besides I like Radio better than TV. There is a local talent that I have heard at The Freeman on Mondays, Breanna Gabriel Parker. She is very good at Jazz and also newer music. If I had a show on the radio would definitely want her to come do a show. Also I think a record company would be wise to get her, if she is not already under Contract. I enjoy hearing the Stars before they are well known playing at places where the Food and Music is over priced. 73, Charles, KC5RAI

SHEB WOOLEY (The Purple People Eater-1958) It was a one-eyed, one-horned, flyin’ purple people eater.
