One of our all time favorite Classic Hits tunes is Gladys Knight and the Pips #1 hit single Midnight Train to Georgia (1973). An original member of Gladys Knight and the Pips, William Guest, who is a member of the Grammy winning group from 1953 to 1989, passes away at 74. Guest performs background vocals on other hits such as I Heard It Through the Grapevine.

BEN HAROLD [ex KXOL-1360/KBUY-1540/WBAP-820/KENR-1070] (Knoxville, TN) When I worked at WBAP 820 (PM Drive News), I was told: NEVER change a Harold Taft forecast! Harold would take a telegram-sized, paper sheet, fill it front, back, and even on its sides with his forecast. I was running long in a newscast, one day, briefly looked at the forecast, and reported/paraphrased that Harold Taft in the WBAP Weather Center said it would be partly cloudy with a high of 85. I’d barely cut the mike off, and you’d never seen a short, squat fellow grow 12 feet high, with hair all over his body, as he reminded me of what I’d been warned. I never changed another of his forecasts! Just reminiscing about the “World’s Greatest Weatherman.” Besides, he DID teach me how to read a green-screen weather radar! Ben Harold

FRANK HALEY [KDAZ-730 newsman – ex KLIF-1190, KILT-610, KTRH-740, KVIL FM & KOB-770] (Albuquerque, NM) Subject: Ron Jenkins. FYI. Dallas Tornado. Did you hear about Ron Jenkins: I got this from Facebook Texas Radio Hall of Fame: TRHOF inductee Ron Jenkins (Ron McAlister) was one of the residents evacuated from the Rowlett Nursing Home and Convalescent Center for Saturday’s tornado, east of Dallas. I’ve read that the building suffered wind damage, but haven’t heard if residents were allowed to return. Ron has lived in the center for about 15 years, after a series of strokes (and eventual blindness) occurred. Hope you have a happy new year. Frank Haley

JAY WALKER [CBS Radio Dallas/KJKK FM/KTSA-550/KTFM FM/Own Jay Walker Prod/40 Plus Years In Radio] (Dallas/Fort Worth, TX) Subject: Good songs, great music. Jim A smart programmer uses “Oh WOW’ songs like spices on your brisket, a little goes a long way and like depending on the cut of brisket need to be changed up every now and then for the correct ‘texture’. If you run “Oh WOW’ songs in and out of rotation regularly they don’t have a chance to burn and still retain value as a ‘spice’. But since you and I did not crunch this through a focus group no one will take the idea seriously. Except for those that ‘do’ and as a consequence reap the rewards in higher ratings. Enjoy the mild weather Jim, too soon will it get cold and Suzie will need a sweater. Jay
