GRADUATE DIRECTOR DRIFTS AWAY

Around Christmas 1967, Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft) shocks us with her seduction of young college graduate Ben Braddock (Dustin Hoffman) in Mike Nichols’ steamy movie The Graduate. As film director Mike Nichols brings fierce wit, caustic social commentary and wicked absurdity to such film, TV and stage hits as Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and Silkwood.

LEN HART [former KILT/KENR/KNUS newscaster] (Geneva, Switzerland) Jim, At the height of the Watergate scandal, it was a bit more formal than other news conferences. As Rather approached the microphone, he identified himself with these words: “Dan Rather, CBS News”. Half of the hall applauded, but almost as many non-news types JEERED! When the hubbub died down, Nixon said: “Are you running for something, Mr. Rather? ” Rather shot back: “No, Mr. President; are you?” Half of the hall broke out in applause, other laughter. Your friend, Len

DAVE MICHAELS [WSAI-1360/KONO-860/KBUC FM] (Dayton-Huber Heights, OH) Subject: Russ Knight Story. Don’t know if this story is true; but the guy that told me – swears to it! The Weird Beard ( Russ Knight ) be-friended “Jack Ruby” in Dallas ( Old KLIF Studios -downtown Bldg.) Ruby would come up and sit in the Studio with “Russ” while he was doing his. He talked about Kennedy to Russ and his feelings about Lee Harvey, and the rest of course is in the History books. DM

RONNIE RAPHAEL [former 1970s Mercury records Promotion-Dallas, TX now Independent Promotions] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Wow… long time Jim! Hi Jim: Don Sundeen emailed me and told me you had asked about me, and I was really touched that you remembered me enough to ask. In the mid 70’s during my first local promotion job (Mercury), I remember coming to see you every Tuesday and waiting in the lobby (KXOL-1360) for my turn. You always treated me kindly and with respect, and I appreciate that. Don told me you asked about my cousin, Mickey. Mickey has been with Willie (Nelson) longer than I have been doing promotion. He is coming in for Thanksgiving, and we will be celebrating together at my home. I have been doing indy promotion for 34 years and still doing it today. I have been fortunate enough to make a living at it after these years. Many of my friends I started with have moved on, found other careers, retired, or passed on. I have been very lucky in career, and I try to always appreciate that. Hope you are well. REGARDS, SWAN Ronnie Raphael

CHUCK DUNAWAY [former DJ on WABC-770, KLIF-1190, KBOX-1480, KXOL-1360 & KILT-610] (Houston-Katy, TX) When Kent Burkhart was at KXOL (1360) he was also going to TCU. He did the 10 to midnight show. I remember coming into the studio in the morning to a greasy set of pots (potentiometers) on the console because Kent Always ate potato chips or French fries or a hamburger while on the air. KXOL_1966-01-29_2 At KXOL Kent and I developed to first printed top 40 survey which we showed to Don Keyes at KLIF (1190)…three weeks later McLendon had a printed survey for all of his station followed by Storz etc, but we were the very firsts at KXOL. We put a hole in the middle of the O in KXOL so the shop owners could hang them on nails and people could pick them up without bothering the clerk. Record shops In the early 50’s were not the Palaces they eventually became. Pat Boone, also at TCU, had a TV featuring local talent on Saturdays. When his first record hit the KXOL chart he asked me to send his mom several copies which I did. He was married to singer Red Foleys daughter at the time. I remained in touch periodically since that time and I used to see he and Pat at the TRHoF dinners until they stopped coming a few years ago. Great friend and great person.

TRIVIA ANSWER: As an RCA records promo rep T.G. Sheppard becomes friends with Elvis Presley. Around Thanksgiving 1974, T.G. releases his first #1 tune Devil in the Bottle. In 1976, the King of Rock and Roll presents Country singer T.G. Sheppard with his first tour bus. Also in 1976, Cash Box anoints T.G. Sheppard as the Best New Male Artist.

CHARLES GEORGE [ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Its Elementary. The place where KSKY (660) was on Bruton now has an Elementary School being built on the site. KSKY now has moved to Balch Springs from what I have been told. I once visited KSKY studios in The Stoneleigh Hotel on Maple, I liked seeing their pipe organ. I did this while I was a volunteer at KCHU. I would listen to local radio if they were more creative, also I am not the age that they want, since I am retired and not as affluent as those in North Dallas, Plano, etc. and not as influenced by ads. For now I like Spotify. I went and paid for a premium membership so as not to get the advertisements. I also tend to be free form in my approach to listening: Classical, Jazz, Blues, Folk, etc. Charles George KC5RAI

COURTNEY LOVE (July 9, 1964 – p) I can turn on the radio right now and be inspired.
