BUD BUSCHARDT [WFAA TV CH 8 Director, KVIL FM, ABC sat radio DJ] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Sammy Alfano. Jim, A friend of mine sent this to me from The Houston Chronicle: Record/talent promotion man, Sammy Alfano of Katy, TX died in his home on December 10, 2016 at age 72. In 1967, he moved to California where he worked for ABC Records, Capitol and Elektra-Asylum. He was one of the top record promotion men in the business. He worked with The Eagles, Jackson Browne, Eddie Rabbit and many others. Sammy returned to Houston in 1980 where he established Sammy Alfano Promotions. It was then that he discovered artists Clint Black and Clay Walker among others. I’m sure many of the DJ’s and MD’s across the country will remember him. Nice guy. I knew him from his days at Lamar High School where he was in my sister’s homeroom. R.I.P. Sammy. Bud

JAY WALKER [CBS Radio Dallas/KJKK FM/Infinity KTSA-550/KTFM FM/Own Jay Walker Prod/Jay Walker Competitive Audio consultant 40 Plus Years In Radio] (Ft. Worth-Hurst, TX) Subject: AT&T – Time Warner merger. Just like we found in broadcasting, no good will come from allowing IP and telecom companies to merge into megacorps will do nothing but slow or kill development of better faster cheaper service. I live in the country and there is not ANY broadband provider in my area other than WISP (wireless internet service providers) Back in 1954 the government had to force Ma Bell to provide rural telephone service since Ma Bell didn’t think it was cost effective to run lines out in the country which brought us the Rural Telephone Administration followed by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) in 1954.

JOANIE GREEN [KPRC TV CH 2, KZEW FM, KFWD FM, KNOK FM, KAUM FM, KILT FM, KNUZ-1230, Metro Traffic, Houston Taping for the Blind] (Tulsa, OK) Hi Jim, I worked part-time for KNUZ radio for over 10 years. I loved playing the oldies. I volunteered every week for 17 years at Houston Taping for the Blind (they are now known as “Sight Into Sound.”) I had a weekly one-hour radio show titled, “Tales of Suspense!” and I read creepy stories and books for that. We also did “Short Story Theater” where I got one lady to find us material that was out of copyright; I would get local radio/TV talent to read the parts and we’d read it between the 6 & 10PM newscasts at Channel 2 in the production studios. Channel 2 would record it, I’d edit it at home in our audio studio we had. Ch 2’s audio man, Bobby, would create music for it as well as special sound effects and Taping would air the finished productions. It was like old time radio dramas…they were really great. I also filled in and read news for Taping if they happened to have someone call in sick or was on vacation. Take care and talk with you soon. Joan

MacLaughlan, a Beatles researcher at UCLA, uncovers a playlist from WLS-890 in Chicago, which plays Please Please Me in February 1963. The Beatles and Capitol invites Carroll James Jr. to be the master of ceremonies at The Beatles’ first American concert at the Washington Coliseum. Carroll James Jr. passes away from cancer in 1997.

BLAKE LINDSAY [ex KHFI FM, KBTS, KTSA-550, KTFM FM, KLUV FM, KODZ FM & KISS FM] (Dallas, TX) Only in TX can it be 70 degrees on a December Saturday afternoon at 12:00 then drop to a very chilly 20 freezing degrees at 12:00 midnight. Dropping 50 degrees in 12 hours is interesting indeed. I’m trying to avoid that word brutal. Blake Lindsay

JOHN STEINBECK (02/27/1902 – 12/20/1968) I have said that Texas is a state of mind, but I think it is more than that. It is a mystique closely approximating a religion.
