WV RADIO LEGEND CALLS IT QUITS AT 42

On Friday, August 11, 2017 after more than four decades on the air, long-time Huntington, WV radio host Clint McElroy retires from Country WTCR FM (103.3). McElroy sighs: The fact that people hear my voice and I’m their friend part of their family and it has always moved me and I think radio will always have that kind of power and I’m certainly going to miss it. Fox11 reports that Clint plans to do more work with his three sons whose careers are taking off.

IHEART MAY NOT DECLARE BANKRUPTCY AFTER ALL

iHeartMedia first quarter of 2017 (ending March 31) financial results are not encouraging. There are also widespread layoffs at various iHeartMedia properties. iHeartMedia SEC filing more than $20 billion in obligations is so crippling that it may not make it to 2018 without filing bankruptcy.

Mutual fund Franklin Resources works with investment bank PJT Partners on a restructuring plan that might save iHeart from bankruptcy.

FCC TAKES DODGE’S RADIO STATIONS

Brian Dodge misrepresents himself to the FCC as the operator of two AM radio stations, nine translators and two LPFMs for nearly three decades. The FCC enters a Consent Decree to surrender the license of WCKL-560 Catskill, NY plus two LPFM’s. The FCC grants one year renewals to comply to the Consent Decree within 180 days which ends on April 25, 2017. Brian Dodge fails to comply. The FCC deletes his remaining licenses.

JACK PARNELL [former Program Director/DJ on WHBQ-560] (Memphis, TN) Subject: Glen Campbell. Jim: Since I first heard the name “Glen Campbell” I loved to hear him sing…and of course play. It was 1961, and I was morning man at WHBQ in Memphis, Tennessee. I played “Turn Around, Look At Me”, which was a new record at the time. George Klein, who was also a WHBQ DJ, came into the control room, pointed toward the turntable and said: “How do you like that song? That’s Glen Campbell from a farm in DEE-light Arkansas, and he’s headed for stardom!…hear that guitar? he’s the best, and his singin’ is getting better all the time.” Since George was a #1 friend of Elvis, he had run into Glen at a movie shoot in L.A. Everything Glen did was great, so I became a big fan of his. I never met him, but he used to listen to all of us at WHBQ when he was in the area. I also watched every one of his network TV Shows, as well as his guesting on other shows. I’m sure there are millions now who miss him greatly. Glen Campbell, may you REST IN PEACE! Jack Parnell

JAY WEAVER [ex KLBK–1360 Lubbock; KCUL-1540; KBUY-1540; KPCN-730 Ft. Worth/Dallas] (DFW-Hurst, TX) Subject: Glen Campbell. Amazing! Would love to live that part of my life over again. Lotsa fun since then, but that was too much fun! I’m taking a moment here to tell you again, Jim how much I enjoy your efforts and your column. Thank you and I appreciated what you do, very much! JEFF THOMPSON [NBC NEWS, 30 Rockefller Plaza-Thompson Comm] (Winston-Salem, NC) Subject: Not sure you received this last “AD ON” note about my Texas Radio history. I also worked at KXYZ AM & FM, which brought me from Austin to Houston….where I created the internally syndicated radio program, “Space Symposium” which led to my being chosen to build and run KMSC adjacent to the space center. I had been a space enthusiast since long before there was a space program. Astronomy was my first major in college (UT) before switching to Radio, TV & Film. which I had performed in (musically) since I was a very young child entertainer. Just background FYI. Thanks – JT

TRIVIA ANSWER: On August 13, 1966 Top 40 KLUE-1280 Longview, TX owned and managed by legendary Tony Bridges leads the first of the Beatles bonfires where ex-Beatles fans burn Beatles’ records in protest of John Lennon’s bigger than Jesus comment. The next morning, lightning strikes KLUE-1280’s broadcast tower throws KLUE-1280 off the air and sends its news director to the hospital.

JIM BELL [KUHF FM 88.7 Morning Edition anchor since 1997-retires 2010] (Lufkin, TX) At about the same time in the early sixties, businessman Leroy Gloger bought KRCT AM in Pasadena, changed the calls to KIKK, and changed Houston’s Country Music scene forever. Gloger wanted the Uptown Country style Chet Atkins was pioneering in Nashville, so he threw out the drawling hayseed announcers and hired polished professional uptown jocks from the Pop Music stations. Bailey was one of his first hires and his first Program Director. Bailey hired other pop jocks and lured the infamous “tell-it-like-it is” news-caster Richard Dobbyn away from KILT. Together Bailey and Dobbyn made KIKK AM and FM the most listened-to stations in Houston. Under Bailey’s guidance, KIKK trademarked the famous “Boot-I-Boot-Boot” logo and the “I’m a KIKKER” and “KIKK-UP Truck” bumper stickers. Bailey holds the distinct honor of sending the first Country music to the moon when he gave a cassette tape.

ROBERT MITCHUM (August 6, 1917 – July 1, 1997) I started out playing the villain in Hopalong Cassidy Westerns. I got $100 a week and all the horse manure I can carry home.
