JACK PARNELL [WHBQ-Memphis PD/DJ & WDXI-Jackson DJ] (Memphis, TN) Subject: Billy Joe Royal. Hi Jim: Last night (10/10) Shirley and I went to the “KOOL103 Caravan of Stars” at The Carl Perkins Civic Center in Jackson, TN. and just after the intermission, there was a tribute to Billy Joe Royal…the sound engineer played 4 of his well-known hits from cd on the house sound system. Then near the end of the show, one of the stars of the show, with the backup band and backup singers, and many in the audience sang “Down In The Boondocks”. Then the owner of KOOL103, Gerry Hunt spoke to us about his friendship with Billy Joe, then shared some funny stories about Billy Joe’s many show appearances in the past 30 years. The shows run twice a year…in the spring and in the fall, and draw huge crowds. They come From the surrounding area…even some out of state, and many from Memphis and Nashville. Gerry also owns WDXI am, which was where I worked in 1957-58. Jack Parnell-former WHBQ-Memphis AND WDXI-Jackson disk jockey.

JAY WALKER [CBS Radio Dallas/KJKK FM/KTSA-550/KTFM FM/Own Jay Walker Prod/40 Plus Years In Radio] (Dallas/Fort Worth, TX) Subject: Good songs, great music. Good morning Jim and Suzie, The reference reminded me of an HD-2 service on which I am still ‘the voice’ as far as I know. It’s 100.3 HD-2 in Dallas. Back when ‘HD’ was first launched in the Dallas market a good CBS programming friend Kurt Johnson had the idea of putting on a format which focused on “The Rat Pack” era. We called it “The Sound of The Strip”. In addition to the vocals we play all those great classic instrumentals you just don’t hear anymore. The payoff was out of all the HD-2 streams CBS had on the air, “The Strip” as we called it was the only one where if it hiccupped in the slightest would we hear about it from listeners. Yes ‘listeners’ as in plural. I was told that ‘The Strip” was one of the highest rated HD-2 streams in Dallas and had great internet listening numbers. My best to you as always. Jay Walker

CHRIS KAYE [965TheX] (Houston, TX) …began in radio in 1979 at 17 on KGOL in Lake Jackson, Texas. That station is now 107.5 The Eagle. Most of my career I worked in the Pittsburgh market. I’m friends with Randy Kendrick.

CHARLES GEORGE [KC5RAI – ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Blues in the Night. I found out that Smokin’ Joe Kubek passed away at 58 from a heart attack. The Fort Worth Tribune has a good article about him and his music. Almost thing of a song about now not exactly Blues but could be one: Hush. I liked Billy Joe Royal’s version but a Rock group did the song, Hush.

TRIVIA ANSWER: On October 16 1951 singer Richard Penniman who already uses stage name Little Richard makes his first recordings on RCA Camden at the WGST-640 studios in Atlanta, GA. It takes another four years plus working in New Orleans’ French Quarter before Little Richard becomes a Rock ‘n’ Roll star.

Free ice cream, a guy on stilts dressed like uncle Sam. A lady who twirled hula hoops and a guy who traveled around on a big ball…entertainment, ice cream, music and fun for the Dunaway’s. Life is good in our neighborhood…thank you Mattress Mack…oh the reason for the event…blue Bell ice Cream is back on the shelves…welcome home Blue Bell. Chuck
