MIKE & MIKE TO SPLIT UP?

Is ESPN planning to split up Mike Greenberg (left) and Mike Golic?

Is ESPN planning to split up Mike Greenberg (left) and Mike Golic?

Rookie NFL Network’s Good Morning Football draws 100,000-plus viewers per show. Rumors are that ESPN executives consider moving Mike Greenberg who is one half of the long-running Mike & Mike ESPN Radio show that simulcasts on ESPN2 TV into a new role as lead host of a TV show between 6–10 am on ESPN. When Rock groups split and go solo, things never are the same. Such a move puts to an end Greenberg’s on-air partnership with Mike Golic, which begins in October 1998.

CBS RADIO BITES THE DUST

After no takers for CBS Radio, Bloomberg reports that its plan includes a corporate prospectus for senior notes due in 2020. In March 2016, CBS announces plans to divest its radio division. CBS CEO Leslie Moonves tells San Diego radio host Dan Silo: The divestiture would most likely come in the form of a spin-off as opposed to a sale. A sign of the times when the last of the original heavyweight radio station group, CBS Radio virtually hits the exit ramp of its parent company CBS.

DAN MCCURDY [formerly Charlie & Harrigan-KLIF-1190/KBOX-1480 Dallas, TX/WMEX Boston, MA] (Sherman, TX) Subject: O’Reilly Out? Jim… (Brit) Hume is credible in a field that’s generally not, his cut-through-the-fat reporting and no nonsense aura are turning heads in broadcast circles, with news junkies and (we suspect) nicely stunned FOX holes at 48th and Sixth Avenue. I’ve now been hooked BIG TIME and claim ‘On the Record with Brit Hume’ as my first pre-martini news spot. And after his first week, Hume does not disappoint. He’s ready, he’s steady and he’s a comforting throwback to trusted evenings with Cronkite, Brinkley and Jennings. Nielsen! Make room for Hume! KEN DOWE [ex CEO Service Broadcasting #1 KKDA FM (104.5) / EVP McLendon Corp. #1 KLIF-1190 / GM KNUS FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: THE KNUS STORY- Continued. Jim, Michael’s (O’Shea) finest talents may always have been in his competitiveness. Perhaps, I am the most competitive person with whom I am acquainted? However, Michael may be ahead of me in that line. And, he certainly helped us achieve that extraordinarily high sale price. At that time the most money ever paid for a single radio station. Anyone who has ever spent 5 minutes talking with me about the radio industry, knows the high regard I have for Bill Stewart. Bill was of the triumvirate of Storz-McLendon-Stewart. Todd, Gordon, and Bill literally created (invented) Top 40 radio, and in effect, all others that followed their formatics in other musical genres. My mentor at McLendon was Bill Stewart, even before Gordon. kd

JAY WALKER [CBS Radio Dallas KJKK FM/Infinity KTSA-550/KTFM FM/Own Jay Walker Prod/Jay Walker Competitive Audio consultant 40 Plus Years In Radio] (Dallas/Fort Worth, TX) Subject: Thoughts… Jim, Over the air radio is so alien to me I’m tempted to put on a pirate. In Dallas there are a multitude of signals available and not one is programmed for anyone younger than 35 years of age. Yes I know all the ‘reasons’, ad agencies won’t buy an older demos, the older audience is already fixed in buying habits and other nonsense. But as a relative ‘youngster’ of 60 there’s NOTHING musical available on-air and I’m tired to tears of the rants on Talk radio. Sure makes the idea of ‘rolling my own’ attractive. However as I don’t look good in stripes I’ll pass for now..for now. Enjoy the cooler temps, we’ve earned them. Jay Walker

TRIVIA ANSWER: On September 26 1908 the first stereo advertisement for an Edison Phonograph appears in the Saturday Evening Post.

ED MILLER [former OM KPCN-730] (Austin, TX) Subject: (email to Bill Bragg) KPCN-730 Reunion. Still waiting on a date from Brad Wilson and Randy Ryder. No progress there, but they both know the rest of us are feeling some urgency to get reunited. I don’t know what to do but wait as patiently as possible for them to get their obstacles out of the way. As soon as we can get them scheduled, we can move on ahead. So far as (Jim) Newton, he lived during the KPCN days in Irving. Late in life, he moved somewhere out in East Texas which is where he resided until his death. The late Joe Poovey’s late first ex-wife Kay kept in touch with him, and apparently Newton slipped off into dementia in his final years. I learned a lot from him. Poovey, Ryder, and I were pretty young when we started on the air, and so had an awful lot to learn. Sure glad you can help ‘ol Jim (Rose) get to Austin from Houston. That will really make it complete. See ya soon, I hope. Ed

REUNION (Life Is A Rock (But The Radio Rolled Me) Listen, remember, they’re playing our song Rock it, sock it, Alan Freed me, Murray Kaufman and Boston Monkey play it funky.
