Two of our favorite movies, Stir Crazy (1980) and Silver Streak (1976), star a pair of our favorite comedians, Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor. We also remember Gene as the charming candy man in the children’s favorite Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. In 1989, doctors diagnose two-time Oscar-nominated actor Gene Wilder with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. On August 29, 2016, Gene Wilder, star of film classics Bonnie and Clyde and The Producers passes away at 83.

In the early 1990s, Dr. Joy Browne launches national syndication on New York’s heritage WOR-710 on affiliates all across America. Alannah Sinclaire says when she speaks on the phone with her sister Dr. Joy Browne chatting about movies reviews, recipes and from a recent birthday party for our 95-year-old mom the phone suddenly disconnects. Talk radio star Dr. Joy Browne passes away at 71 on Saturday, August 27, 2016 when her heart stops beating.

SHOCK JOCK LEAVES THE BUILDING After a four-year run, polarizing Sports Radio host Josh Innes exits KILT-610 Houston, TX in December 2013. Innes tells the Chronicle: The main reason I decided not to stay here is that I didn’t want to do that show with Rich anymore. Innes flees to WIP FM (94.1) in Philadelphia, PA. After he blasts sports talk rival host Mike Missanelli in the City of Brotherly Love, WIP FM cans Josh Innes an hour before he goes on air Wednesday afternoon, August 24, 2016.

Dukes of Hazzard actor John Schneider believes the first flood in mid-March 2016 at his Louisiana production studio is bad. Schneider’s Livingston Parish-based studio includes his 116-year-old home. But in August 2016, overflow from the Tickfaw River floods his Holden, LA home, editing and screening rooms. Thank God that a friend rescues his dogs, who freely roam the property, when they jump onto a picnic table in the barn.

TRIVIA QUESTION: Who is the host of the first network game show? The answer appears below.

MIKE SIMPSON [ex KLIF, KRLD-AM/FM/TV, WFAA-AM, KDSX-Sherman/Denison, KIKN-Corpus Christi, KVET-Austin, KFJZ/Texas State Network and KVIL-FM 3 separate times] (Sacramento, CA) Subject: “My father and I are selling KLIF…” And with those words from the golden-throated “Old Scotsman” playing out of a cassette recorder in Ken Dowe’s lap (a “Car-Teach” cassette recorder if I’m not mistaken!) the beginning of the end of legacy Dallas radio was at hand. Nothing was ever the same again… I was a 17 year old student at Dallas’ Bryan Adams High School, with a (very) part time job that was the envy of everyone I knew. I had the distinct privilege and honor of weekend staffing “KLIF Mobile Unit #6, 1190 and out”…the very same little red station wagon commanded during the week by the late, great Sam Pate. The entire KLIF staff had been summoned to a mandatory staff meeting held in the movie theatre at Triangle Point. I had to cut afternoon classes and take the bus in order to attend. What a sad surprise to find out the place we all loved would forever change… Mike Simpson

JIM BELL [KUHF FM 88.7 Morning Edition anchor since 1997-retires 2010] (Lufkin, TX) Subject: Sports Shock-Jock Josh Innes. Hey Jim – Subject: Former KILT Sports Shock Jock Josh Innes has been canned in Philadelphia. Can’t say I’m surprised. He was an obnoxious jerk at KILT and an even bigger obnoxious jerk in Philly. His brain has no filters and he just can’t control himself. Apparently nobody up there told him you just don’t make racial jokes and remarks in a town like Philly, where racial issues are always at or near the boiling point. Here’s a link to the article in the Chronicle. ( It’s interesting to note that this story is in papers all over the north and northeast, including the New York Daily News and The Business Journal. TRIVIA ANSWER: The Dean of Game Show Hosts, Dennis James, begins his game show hosting career as host of the first network game show, Dumont’s Cash and Carry.

GARY DELAUNE [KYTY-810 / KLIF-1190 / KENS TV CH 5] (San Antonio, TX) Jim: I have covered many political conventions but never attended a political rally as just an observer. Did so Tuesday night in Austin and I was impressed at the smooth way it was handled by the Trump people. They even ejected protestors with a courteous manner. However, there were many anti-Trump protestors outside the gates who kept indicating the half-a-hook-em-horn signal. I always wear a coat and tie and with my lapel pins on the jacket, with my phone and hearing aids, I was standing near a barricade on the floor and an attendee asked me if I was in charge of that area. I said…no…but everything is okay. It pays to look official. Gary D (
