It was a typical Trump Saturday – a tweet storm of thirteen – with one tweet rising above the rest. The President of the United States was actually threatening to take some goodies away from Congress.

Mr. Trump was not happy that the repeal of Obamacare was not going to pass. So he threatened to take away the heavy subsidies that taxpayers provide for wealthy members.

You may recall that Obamacare required members of Congress and staffs to buy their insurance through the online markets. Congressmen did not want to be treated like normal people – so Obama stepped in. Congressmen make far too much money to qualify for subsidies, but Obama changed all that – and now, we taxpayers pick up 72 percent of the cost of their insurance premiums. Are you listening, Mr. Trump? Tear down those subsidies!

The President tweeted thusly:

If a new HealthCare Bill is not approved quickly, BAILOUTS for Insurance Companies and BAILOUTS for Members of Congress will end very soon!

Nice. Congress should have to live under the rules in makes for the rest of us. But right now, that’s not happening with the Affordable Care Act.

Back in the day, President Obama, realizing that members of Congress are very special people in their own minds, used his pen & phone to make a big change – just for them. He allowed them to count their congressional offices as small business – and now we taxpayers get to pay for 72 percent of the cost of their premiums. I know I feel pretty darn good about subsidizing people who make ten times what I do and I’m sure you feel the same way.

Mick Mulvaney, Director of the White House Budget Office, clarifies…

Video: Mulvaney grilled by Jake Tapper on CNN’s State of the Union where he explains Trump’s tweet about congressional subsidies

Mulvaney went on CNN’s State of the Union to say:

“What he’s saying is, ‘Look, if Obamacare is hurting people, and it is, then why shouldn’t it hurt insurance companies, and, more importantly, perhaps, for this discussion, members of Congress?”  Mulvaney said.  “There is a certain benefit that members of Congress get as part of an OPM decision from a couple of years ago, and I think the president is simply looking at this and going, ‘Is this fair?”

The left-wing Republican from Maine, Susan Collins, said that even if Trump follows through, it would not change her mind. It might not, in fact, change any member’s mind—but that’s not the point. The point is that members of Congress, who look in the mirror and see someone very special, should have a rude awakening.

We send them there to represent us and to pass commonsense legislation – not to get perk after perk.

Mr. Trump should take away this subsidy in any case – as a part of draining the swamp. This reminds me of my favorite segment evah of CBS’s “60 Minutes” in which Steve Kroft exposed Congress as a hotbed of self-centered elitists that go to Washington for personal enrichment.

Video: Published on Oct 20, 2013 – Most Americans believe it’s illegal for politicians to profit from their public office but, as 60 Minutes’ Steve Kroft (with an assist from CREW) reports, that’s not the case.

Mr. Trump should watch this segment and then he should start looking for other congressional perks that he could end.
