There were two technological advances that took hold in the early 1990’s and were soon off and running. Today, they’ve both completely changed the culture and the landscape of America – the world wide web / internet and cell phones / smart phones.

In the case of the internet, it provided more than enough data – to any American who wanted to analyze it – that should have disqualified Barack Obama as a state senator in Illinois, let alone as a presidential candidate in 2008. Frank Marshall Davis, Bill Ayers, Jeremiah Wright, Rashid Khalidi, et. al. should have kept him from sniffing any political office. At no point in time previously had Americans been armed with more weaponry to ensure a qualified president.

Yet, they elected – and then reelected – the least qualified president in the history of the country.

Aside from the cult-like status the media created for Obama, smart phones have made people stupid. Anywhere you look, Americans are staring at their cell phones like it’s a portal to digital crack. Apps, texts, games, deals, facebook, twitter, and myriad other tools are used by smart phone users to construct their own realities. All the while, harrowing realities swirl around them like wolves who see lost sheep.

One facebook user writes, “I don’t have anything to say. I just want to see how many ‘like’s I can get.”

This is not to say that smart phones themselves are bad but like any powerful tool, how it’s used determines its fruits. America is in crisis and much of it has to do with disengagement and disinterest on the part of Americans.

People who know what’s going on in the world are apoplectic about the apathy of so many of their fellow countrymen because of what the internet has revealed to them.

Knowledge is power and never before has more information been available to so many Americans that would help them hold their leaders accountable by turning that information into knowledge and thus power. Yet, never before has corruption in those leaders been so obviously rampant.

The reason is because Americans are choosing to be powerless.

Phones may be smart but that doesn’t mean they can’t have stupid owners. In fact, by comparison, some phones may be smarter than their owners.
