The mainstream media always keeps its powder dry until a Republican nominee for president is chosen. Prior to that choice, the mainstream media courts the weakest Republican candidate. It did so in 2008 and 2012, and then it came out for the Democrat against the weakest Republican candidate it helped to elevate.

One of the arguments made by Ohio Governor John Kasich as to why he should be the Republican nominee for president is that he’s the only one who can beat Hillary; he points to the polls to make his case. This and the behavior of the mainstream media is precisely why such polls during primaries mean less than nothing. The media would love for Kasich to be the nominee over Trump or Cruz; that’s why it’s playing nice with Kasich now.

Here is the “mighty Kasich” in denial, pushing a reality that simply will not exist if he were the nominee:

As for Ted Cruz, despite how well-spoken he is, he’s no match for the media. One of the reasons is that he’s more politically correct than Trump. Cruz has been far more measured in his speech than Trump. That can be an asset but Trump has exposed it as a weakness.

During the 2008 primaries, we were told John McCain was the best chance Republicans had to beat Barack Obama. That’s because, during those primaries, the media coddled McCain – and he bought it. Then came the general and the mainstream media turned on a dime, serving as the Democratic Party’s attack dog. It not only destroyed McCain but voters were turned off by their candidate’s refusal to fight back on issues like Jeremiah Wright, Tony Rezko, Bill Ayers and Rashid Khalidi.

Then, in 2012, we were told Mitt Romney was the only guy who could beat Obama. He won the nomination and we got the McCain redux. The media turned its guns on Romney after he won the primaries, just as it did against McCain. The result was the same. Romney refused to fight back and was destroyed.

At one point in the primaries – after a debate – Democratic operative and media personality Donna Brazile inadvertently let the strategy out of the bag but George Stephanopolous shhh’d her and told her to stop it. Here is the audio:

As I wrote in my opposition piece to Lynn Woolley’s argument that Trump would get clobbered by Hillary, any poll at this point in time that measures head-to-head match-ups in the general is not just hypothetical; it fails to factor in perhaps the most important variable.

That variable is media behavior.

As the quintessential establishmentarian, Kasich’s response to that behavior is beyond predictable. As a heavily consulted candidate, he would fight for those precious independent voters Romney was so concerned about. Romney won the independents going away but… he lost the base because he took a dive at several points. The most obvious and damaging was in the third debate, when he refused to confront Obama on Benghazi.

The media would shred Kasich and his poll numbers against Hillary would drop like a rock; we have history as a guide.

On the other hand, Donald Trump has demonstrated that he can fight the media… and win. Should the mainstream media attempt to fight for Hillary against Trump, it will be the media who will be on its heels.

That will not be the case if anyone other than Trump – including Cruz – gets the nomination.

The fact is that no one has demonstrated a propensity for defeating the media – an arch Republican nemesis for many years – more than Trump.

That is why he will destroy Hillary, regardless of what the polls say today.

The American people love to see the mainstream media bully get manhandled and Trump has long ago proven he’s the best man for the job.
