In her exchange with Donald Trump, Morning Joe Co-host Mike Brzezinski waded into the topic of Trump’s Muslim Ban Plan. Instead of getting into the substance, she decided to pepper him with one question, though asked in a very sympathetic tone. That question? What message do you have for Muslim Americans in light of your proposal?
Despite Trump’s simple and quite understandable answer, Mika came across as thick-headed but that behavior belies a much more noteworthy explanation; she’s defending her father (more on that after the video):
As for Mika’s father, Zbigniew Brzezinski, it was he who spearheaded a strategy to covertly support the Mujahideen (Muslim Brotherhood) in Pakistan against the Soviets in neighboring Afghanistan, as Jimmy Carter’s National Security Advisor. This practice was continued under the Reagan administration. After the fall of the Soviet Union, many in the Washington establishment got in bed with stealth Brotherhood apparatchiks; Americans for Tax Reform (ATR) President Grover Norquist was one of many. Though he got in a bit too deep and has gotten caught, the establishment continues to protect him.
That Trump’s Muslim Ban Plan is still getting talked about clearly demonstrates that he struck a chord with the American people and a nerve with the media. As I’ve maintained, the way for him to take the next step would be to refine his plan and narrow its focus. Trump should hold up what was proposed by former Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN). Much more difficult for the media to refute would be Trump zeroing in on the Muslim Brotherhood and all of its front groups in the U.S.
In 2014, Bachmann introduced a bill that would identify the Brotherhood as a terrorist organization and slap sanctions on all of its groups in the U.S., and there are a bunch. In an interview with Newsmax TV’s Steve Malzberg, Bachmann even relayed that former Vice President Dick Cheney told her that he agreed with that proposal. That is newsworthy because Cheney was one of the many who denounced Trump’s proposal. If the Republican front runner were to focus on the Brotherhood exclusively, Cheney would have a very difficult time reconciling those two positions.
It is this possibility that the likes of Mika and the rest of the Washington establishment – on both sides – fears.
The dirty little secret is that Trump is very close to the truth and just needs to move away from the broad brush of banning all ‘Muslims’ to the finer point of banning all Muslim Brotherhood front groups in the U.S.
That might just be the beginning of the end for his opponents.
