Temple’s Cultural Activities center presents:

“Songs Throughout History” Coming to the CAC Saturday, September 29th, 2018

Temple, TX: Here’s one history lesson you’re really going to enjoy!

It’s a musical journey through many of the great moments in American history – with a dash of Canadian lore tossed in for good measure. Temple’s Cultural Activities Center (CAC) presents “Songs Throughout History” with Lynn Woolley & Friends.

You know that General Andrew Jackson commanded U.S. troops at the Battle of New Orleans, but who was the British general? How did Sam Houston go about defeating Santa Anna? Can you name two boats that were sunk during World War II? How did many slaves feel about being freed? Who was the Big Bear that crossed the ocean to come to America?

We’ll “Remember the Alamo” with Jane Bower’s great song.

These and many other questions will be answered in song as we feature the music of Jimmie Driftwood, Woody Guthrie, Robbie Robertson & the Band, Canadian songwriter “Stompin’ Tom Connors, Peggy Seeger, Ewan McColl and many others.

Our historical foray includes stories of bravery at the Alamo, President Kennedy as a war hero, the innocence of the Coonskin Cap craze and the tragedies of a presidential assassination and Vietnam.

Our journey begins with the War of 1812 and takes us all the way to the attacks of 9/11.

“Tear Down This Wall” is the story of Reagan at the Brandenburg gate

Joining Lynn Woolley onstage will be accomplished songwriter Michael Mahler (Wild Horses) who co-wrote the song “Wood & Wire” for country legend George Jones. Michael’s wife Angela Mahler will perform on vocals, Terence Guerrero will be on string bass, and Steven Scheifley of Waco will be on drums and backup vocals.

The audience will be encouraged to sing along.

How did this concert come to be?

“I just realized one day how many great songs about historical events have been written — and how many of them I already knew,” says Lynn Woolley. “As a major history buff, I thought it would be amazing to perform them all at one time with some of my musician friends.” Woolley says this will be primarily a folk music concert about things we learned in school or on the news. “What a fun way to brush up on history,” he says.
