Did the police who arrested and tased NBA player Sterling Brown do everything exactly right? Perhaps not. However, Brown acted stupidly in two very specific ways. First, he parked his car sideways in a Walgreens parking lot, over a handicapped parking space. That warranted two citations right off the bat.

Second, Brown failed to respect authority when a police officer asked him to step back. Most noteworthy is that what happened from there resulted entirely from those two things. Brown behaved like Judd Nelson in the Breakfast Club. Nelson’s character just couldn’t shut up when the teacher told him to. The result was two more months of detention.

For the record, both the teacher and Nelson were white.

Brown Behaved Stupidly, Like Someone Looking to Cause What happened

Why did Brown park his car that way? When the police office asked him, he didn’t get an answer. When the officer first approached Brown, he said, “How you doing? Got a Drivers License?” Brown proceeded to move toward getting in his car. The officer told him to back up. When Brown didn’t, the officer lightly pushed him backward.

From there, it seems like Brown continued to be confrontational and uncooperative. At one point, he even whipped out the “do you know who I am” card. The cop was unimpressed.

Brown behaved like a man looking to exploit the racially charged times we live in.

Furthermore, he should know exactly how to behave when stopped by a police officer. His father was a police officer.

In addition, Brown claims he had the cooler head and was just complying.

Especially relevant is that after parking across two handicapped spaces, Brown insisted:

“I was just being smart. I just wanted to get out of the situation and get home.”

Brown absolutely did not behave like a man who just wanted to get out of the situation. He behaved like a man who wanted to exacerbate it.

Hence, he wasn’t being smart.

Quite the opposite.

Brown acted stupidly.
