First America’s big cities – generally led by liberal mayors – promised to disobey immigration laws and refuse to cooperate with federal authorities. Now, many colleges and universities are threatening to become safe zones for illegal students and professors.
How is this possible in a land of “laws and not men”?
It’s possible because we’ve never had an administration that would actually enforce laws on the books. That may change. Donald Trump was elected on the strength of promises to actually enforce immigration laws. It will be difficult for him to break that promise – and there’s no indication that he intends to.
So it will be a battle of wills that likely could involve the withholding of federal funds — and maybe even filing suits against left-wing college presidents. If the Left wants to do away with borders – they need to change the law.
Why haven’t they changed it?
The simple reason that our immigration laws were not liberalized under George W. Bush or Barack Obama is that the people refused to let it happen. Our radio program championed “Rumble at the Ranch” back when W seemed open to “Comprehensive Immigration Reform.” Talk Radio, at least most of it, was solidly in the camp of law enforcement and securing the borders first. When push came to shove, liberals could not get Congress to change the law.
It’s time to teach liberals a lesson about the rule of law.
President Trump should bring the full force of law against cities and universities that openly ignore or disobey our laws. Whatever is at his disposal – withholding of funds, lawsuits, and even charging mayors and college and university presidents with aiding criminal activity should be brought into play.
If the Left cannot get the Comprehensive Immigration Reform they want – then they must be forced to accept defeat. That’s what Rule of Law is all about.
