What’s good for the University of Missouri is apparently also good for Southern
Methodist in Dallas.

About 150 students gathered to show solidarity with protesters at Mizzou and to make a bunch of demands of college president R. Gerald Turner. R. Gerald should have expelled them – but no. Like any good left-wing academic he stated,

“We are all seeking the same goals – to make SMU as supportive as possible for all students.”

Thank you, R. Gerald for that tidbit of leadership. What do SMU students demand? They demand “no more insensitive comments” that offend their fragile egos. They demand more black students. They demand sensitivity training for freshmen – mandatory. And they demand a chief officer of diversity and inclusion.

Students called the protest a “blackout.” What will R. Gerald do now?

We don’t mean to make fun of the SMU president, but…

OK, maybe we do. That’s because we wish one – just one – college president would stand up to politically correct mobs. Greg Fenves caved at the University of Texas at Austin and took down a statue of Jefferson Davis because cupcakes at UT were unable to function after having laid eyes on it.

At the University of Missouri, President Tim Wolfe actually resigned rather than deal with the situation as a rational adult – apparently unable to contain his liberal guilt.

Back at SMU, here’s what R. Gerald said in a statement Monday night. He said he had received the list of demands and would review it. He would have discussions with the leaders [presumably including D’Marquis Allen, a senior and president of the Black Students Association] and then he went into the “we are all seeking the same thing” twaddle as quoted above.

R. Gerald said nothing about the vast majority of students at SMU who paid the confiscatory tuition rates SMU charges for an education. Nope. Screw them. All he seemed to think about was pandering to a small group of 150 that want to turn SMU into a little U. of Missouri complete with safe zones and other left-wing ideas about how to make other people shut up.

2015-2016 estimated costs to attend SMU
(Source: SMU website)
Tuition & Fees $48,190
Housing $10,120
Dining $5,530
Books (estimate)$1,000
ANNUAL TOTAL $64,840

What is objectionable to protesters at SMU?

We can’t know ALL the racist incidents that occur at a school that is 66 percent white – but we know that list must be long and troubling to liberals. But here are a couple of things cited in the Dallas Morning News article of 11/17/15:

In October, two fraternities – predominately white — organized, then cancelled, a rap-themed frat party. [Note here that if fraternities are not sensitive, what organization in the world is?] The party was going to urge people to “bring out their inner thug.”

Apparently this was offensive to students like Mr. Allen, the head of the Black Students, as no one would presume to think that he or anyone in his circle would nevah, evah listen to gangsta rap. (This is satire. We really don’t have a clue. Maybe gangsta rap is out of vogue. That’s just not a universe we travel in.)

The other incident amounted to anonymous social media posts calling black women at SMU “aesthetically unpleasing,” and saying they “go to crappy high schools and generally don’t deserve to be at SMU to begin with.”

OMG! “Anonymous” ended his/her/its sentence with a preposition. A PREPOSITION! I’ll bet that’s what offended the scholars in the BSA. After all, SMU is an institution of higher learning and if you don’t believe me you can ask R. Gerald.

Like Missouri, SMU will be fun to watch.

On college campuses, liberals are doing something akin to eating their own young. First, the state (or in this case, perhaps the Methodist bishops?) selects a liberal board of trustees. The trustees name a liberal chancellor and a liberal president like R. Gerald to oversee a mostly liberal faculty. Everybody holds hands and talks about love and understanding, and how bad America is and how everything relates to our heritage of slavery and Jim Crow and how no one “of color” ever gets a fair shake.

Most of the students are on campus to learn, but some of them transmogrify into little images of their Marxist teachers. They demand never to be offended and they believe that somebody must pay for all the wrongs that have been wreaked on somebody but not them since they somehow, magically, got enrolled at SMU which is a very expensive elite university.

Isn’t it fun watching them?
